Alarm case study

Improve the app experience when the system detects an intrusion alarm.

Work involved
  • UI / UX
  • Simplify the alarm experience
  • Remove duplicate features
Results
  • Faster app performance
  • Accessible alarm features
  • Clear navigation utilizing existing app elements

1. Arming the system…

When leaving home, change the alarm mode to away.

2. Alarm on the dashboard

Problems:
  • Dashboard features were unavailable until the “Ignore” or “I’m at home” options were selected.
  • The alarm events, “I’m at home,” and camera options were accessible from the default dashboard, duplicating functionality with an additional section to develop, test, and maintain, which increased costs.
  • Two mental models: one for the alarm screen and another for the default dashboard.
  • ”I’m at home” if selected, was changing the alarm mode to a specific mode, rather than one chosen by the user.
Solution:
  • Use simple card on the dashboard indicating when and where the intrusion alarm occurred.

3. Camera archive

Problems:
  • No context of what recordings belong to an intrusion alarm.
  • User would need to swap between the events and the camera archive to make sense of what happen chronologically.
Solution:
  • Include camera recordings in the event list

4. Alarm on event list

Problems:
  • Camera intrusion alarm recordings were available only from camera video archive.
  • Hard to understand which events occurred during the alarm
  • Not clear when alarm started
Solution:
  • Include intrusion alarm recordings
  • Time stamp in red emphasising belongs to an alarm.
  • Alarm floating tab at the top informing about the when it started.
Challenges:
  • Merging the camera archive recording into the event list required a cloud update.

Rooms

With the app growing on devices that could be paired. The navigation needed to follow, encapsulating the device information while providing a user centric experience.

Work involved
